Louise Bennett Coverley Festival - Jamaica

A Festival dedicated to celebrating and promoting the legacy of the Honourable Louise Bennett Coverley in her born-land

Celebrating our Icon

The Inaugural Louise Bennett-Coverley Festival staged October 15, 2022, was the first of its kind in Jamaica. Canada and parts of the United States, specifically Florida, have an annual Ms. Lou festival. Since the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley hails from our shores, it is quite appropriate that Jamaica should have its own festival celebrating the legacy of the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley.

Our events

This year  the LBCF will stage “De Rhythm Sweet” – a two-day festival, October 4-5, 2024.

Day One  features academic panel discussions on Miss Lou’s influence on dub poetry and folklore.

Day Two’s Fun Day and Concert celebrates Miss Lou with performances and cultural presentations.

The LBCF had its inaugural festival October 2022 in Gordon Town where Miss Lou lived for most of her adult life until she migrated to Canada, but it was evident then that such a space was far too small for her reach and impact.

In 2023, we hosted the “Big Up Miss Lou” mini festival at JC Auditorium featuring Canada’s poet laureate, and  Jamaican, Lillian Allen alongside a host of stellar performers.
